“David vs. Goliath: How Finland Stood Firm”

Events / 30 November 2025

On November 30, 1939, the Winter War was unleashed: the Red Army troops began hostilities against Finland. However, Finland managed not only to stand firm but also to inflict a series of significant defeats on the enemy during the initial stage of the confrontation. The Soviet command was forced to revise its strategy, tactics, and mobilize forces. Ultimately, Finland lost a part of its territory but defended the main thing — its independence.

During the museum session, we will discuss the preconditions for the start of the Soviet aggression, the factors behind the success of the Finnish army in the initial stage of the conflict, the change in the course of the war by the Soviet command, and its results.

Special attention will be paid to the participation of Ukrainians in the conflict — a tragedy that became one of the controversial issues of the Winter War. We will also learn the personal stories of the participants in those events through unique exhibits.
