The War Museum has taken a significant step in its systematic efforts to decommunize the memorial space and eliminate ideological markers of the soviet regime. At the initiative of the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine, a soviet-era russian-language propaganda inscription—“their deeds will live forever, their names are immortal”—was dismantled from the “Heroes of the Front and Rear” sculpture gallery.
Under the current conditions of full-scale war, the presence of russian-language inscriptions within the Memorial Complex that broadcast enemy narratives and serve as a justification for russian aggression is unacceptable.
For this reason, the Museum has chosen a responsible and professional approach: in accordance with the decision of the Museum’s Scientific and Restoration Council, the dismantling was carried out for the purposes of restoration, subsequent preservation, and museum reinterpretation of these elements.
The War Museum is consistently working to ensure that the memorial space speaks the language of modern Ukraine—a country defending its freedom, its memory, and its right to its own history.
