War Through the Eyes of Children: The Experience of the Malakov Brothers

Excursions and interactive events / 14 September 2025

War affects everyone differently, dividing life into before and after. The advance of enemy troops, the first shots, the first explosions... The childhood experience of living through war is incomparable and often defining, leaving a deep imprint on one’s future path.

The War Museum invites you to the thematic excursion “War Through the Eyes of Children: The Experience of the Malakov Brothers”. In the space of the exhibition “War: Inverse Perspective”, you will learn about the events of autumn 1941: the Nazi advance on Kyiv, the German occupation of the capital, the destruction of buildings on Khreshchatyk Street, and the terror by the occupiers – through the prism of the creativity of brothers Heorgii and Dmytro Malakov, who witnessed these tragic events in their childhood. The lived experience later found reflection in the professional activities and creativity of Dmytro and Heorgii.

The Malakov brothers – citizens of Kyiv, witnesses of the war, who became prominent figures in culture and science.
