On February 16, 1940, the British destroyer HMS Cossack carried out one of the last classic boarding operations in naval warfare. In Norwegian territorial waters, 299 British sailors were freed from the German supply ship Altmark.
This bold action became a decisive trigger for Adolf Hitler to accelerate preparations for the invasion of Scandinavia. During the session, we will explore how this rescue influenced Norway’s fate in World War II and why the modern German heavy cruiser Blücher was sunk by outdated coastal artillery before reaching Oslo.
